A series of motor vehicle accidents on I-75 south of Gainesville, Florida, killed 11 people after road conditions made travel unsafe. The scene on the highway was gruesome and tragic. Survivors stated that it felt like a scene from a horror movie, while rescuers were quoted saying it was the most traumatic situation they had ever been in.

Road conditions had been problematic prior to the crashes. A nearby brushfire had caused such intense fog and smoke that the highway had been closed earlier that day. Florida Highway Patrol had determined that visibility was good enough to re-open the highway, and the first car accident happened about a half hour after officials had reopened the road.
